Husein is a Syrian refugee in Istanbul anxiously awaiting placement in Europe with his wife and young daughter... and trying to balance home life with a secret gay existence in Istanbul’s underground queer Muslim scene. Husein makes the life-changing decision to take part in the Mr Gay Syria pageant, and we follow his remarkable personal journey, the fierce group of competitors, and the pageant’s organiser Mahmoud (who was also a refugee given asylum in Germany) as they hope to compete in the international Mr. Gay World in Malta, bringing international attention to the invisibility of Syria’s LGBTIQ+ refugees. Full of emotional twists and turns, this documentary captures the courage, hope, and endurance in just one sliver of the many stories from refugees worldwide.
